Qu'est-ce que cette figure extrême du réel que l'on nomme « catastrophe » ? Autant que ses effets destructifs et ravageants, ce signifiant dit le renversement et le tragique de la fin. Le présent ouvrage aborde ce que le « savoir de l'inconscient » apporte de fondamental à l'intelligibilité du sujet catastrophé, en ses dimensions individuelle et collective. De la cartographie des multiples phénomènes catastrophiques à la modélisation du processus, soit la Théorie de la catastrophe en tous ses états, préalable transdisciplinaire pour mieux apprécier l'entrée en scène de la psychanalyse. L'apport freudien considérable à la théorie de la catastrophe permet de dégager ce qu'elle apporte en propre, en son originalité, via la logique traumatique de l'« après-coup ». Cela ouvre la voie à la clinique et à la psychopathologie du sujet catastrophé, via l'outil « métapsychologique », avec une attention particulière à l'occurrence majeure du corpus freudien de la Katastrophe, de la séparation à la castration. Comment la catastrophe en vient-elle à être sublimée ? Du « culte des ruines » à l'écriture du désastre, du récit biblique du Déluge à l'Apocalypse, puis la littérature moderne et la représentation picturale. L'exploration de la « condition catastrophique » collective s'appuiera sur l'exemple privilégié de la pandémie et de ses effets sociaux et subjectifs. Cette enquête sur l'envers inconscient du « phénomène catastrophai » a pour point d'orgue le passage du malaise de la Culture à la catastrophe dans la Culture. La catastrophe se révèle ainsi porteuse, au-delà de la sidération, d'une puissance exceptionnelle de réveil.

Almost every scientist has heard of catastrophe theory and knows that there has been a considerable amount of controversy surrounding it. Yet comparatively few know anything more about it than they may have read in an article written for the general public. The aim of this book is to make it possible for anyone with a comparatively modest background in mathematics - no more than is usually included in a first year university course for students not specialising in the subject - to understand the theory well enough to follow the arguments in papers in which it is used and, if the occasion arises, to use it. Over half the book is devoted to applications, partly because it is not possible yet for the mathematician applying catastrophe theory to separate the analysis from the original problem. Most of these examples are drawn from the biological sciences, partly because they are more easily understandable and partly because they give a better illustration of the distinctive nature of catastrophe theory. This controversial and intriguing book will find applications as a text and guide to theoretical biologists, and scientists generally who wish to learn more of a novel theory.
